Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

Identity Crisis

I am a jerk who used my mom's social security # to obtain a credit card and now it's past due- My conscience is getting to me but I can't tell my mom, it would break her heart. What could happen to me if I turned myself in to the credit card company. Is there a way to resolve this and remove it from my mom's credit report and put it on mine? I will pay the consequences just as long as my mom doesn't find out what I did.

Re: Identity Crisis

Too bad you did not have a conscience when you stole her identity, but better now than later. It would be wise for you to contact the credit card company and tell them. Most credit card companies care more about getting their money than prosecuting people, so your chances are pretty good that they will cooperate - if you pay off the debt in full. It will be up to the credit card company to remove the delinquency from your mother's credit - but your ability to pay them will make all of the difference.

If your mother does find out, the best thing you can do is to be 100% honest with her. Don't try to evade responsibility, an on going lie is worse than getting the whole truth at one time. Then never do anything like this again. For the record you may have committed a felony - which means that you could be sentenced to prison. (Destroy the card and do not use it any more under any circumstances.)
