can a lawyer put a hold on my joint bank account when I haven't even been notified of a judgment against me?

No "hold" can be placed on any account without a judgment. If that is being threatened then the lawyer is in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices and and can in fact be sued for damages and attorney fees.
