Legality of asking for donations to pay fines

4 18-year-olds were arrested in my state for DUI, alcohol possession, consumption, and tobacco possession. The fines totaled $5000.

They set up a bank account asking for donations to pay the fines, and are advertising on a popular networking site. Is this legal?

It is still legal to beg in most areas. In this case it is also particularly irresponsible and juvenile. Any donors obviously want to condone such immature and self indulgent behavior. I'd notify the court and see how entertained the judge was.....
