Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

Question about ''dunning'' letter

I received a letter from a bill collector some time back, and I was wondering, the part where they inform you that if you dispute the debt or any portion thereof or seek the orginial creditor, are they not supposed to inform you that while this process is being done, they will stop collection?

Re: Question about ''dunning'' letter

You should have been advised in the first collection letter of your right to dispute the debt. If you dispute the debt, send a letter immediately and request that you be given written verification that you created and are responsible for the debt. They have 30 days to provide the information. Technically they can continue to collect the debt in the meantime. However, to slow them down, in the same letter request that they do not contact you by telephone - only in writing.
