Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

No response from collector

We received the collection bill on a Wed. and then due due on the following Mon. They say that we have 15 days to pay but I received it so late. Anyways, I sent payment on Fri. and then a week later received an awful call telling me that I owed another $20 - due to it being a day late. They say that I can in writing contest within 30 days of original date which I did. I have the $20, but I thought the principle behind this whole situation was worth sending the letter. In the letter, I said that I wanted all contact in writing so that I had proof of what was going on, but it's been 3 mths. and no word from them and now my checks aren't being taken. My question is...Do they have a time period as to their response to me? Oh and, when the letter is dated let's say the 1st and I have 15 days, does that my payment is due on the 15th or 16th?

Re: No response from collector

If you are dealing with a collection agency they have probably violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This federal law regulates what collectors can due. It appears that their timetable for payment is in violation, and their may be other violations. If you still have copies of their letters and recall what you were told, and if you want to investigate this matter more, call me or some other attorney familiar with collections law.
