Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

Responsible for charges?

Weeks after completing coursework through a university, I received a statement from them showing an outstanding balance. The university is charging me for a fee they neglected to inform me about prior to my registration. In addition, although I had given them my credit card info to pay for two classes, they apparently failed to charge me for one and only charged me a partial amount for the other. I received an email confirmation from my academic counselor that I had successfully registered (you must pay before registering) back in May. Now in August they are saying I owe them. I did everything I was supposed to do. I can't help it if they have poor accounting skills. Am I responsible for their errors and for a fee I never knew about??

If I do end up being responsible, do they have a right to collect at will? I had the money when I offered it to them in May and thought it had been paid. Right now I don't have the money and worry their trying to collect it will negatively affect the purchase of a house. Do I have any rights in saying how and when it would be repaid considering it was their own error to begin with?

Re: Responsible for charges?

You received the benefit of your classes. If the error the school made was clerical, you are obligated to pay. You could have and probably should have brought the error to their attention earlier. Now you will have to pay. It is not fair that you should not have to pay for what you received.
