Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

Statue of Limitations

What is the Statue of Limitations on notifying someone of a debt you feel they owe you? For example; a past landlord is now, almost 4 years later, trying to get us to pay him for disagreements we had when moving out. He sent us a notice that he believed we owed him shortly after us leaving, to which we told him he'd have to take us to court; and now again (almost 4 years later) we have received a letter from a collection agency involving this same matter? Does he get to continue to harass us after so long?

Re: Statue of Limitations

A creditor has eight years for a debt arising from a contract or lease to bring suit. Deny the debt, seek confirmation of the amount, and get it to court.
