Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

time limit on a collection to a college

I signed up for an Algebra class in summer of 1999, I only attended 2 or 3 days and assumed I would be dropped by the proffesor. Seven years later I get a phone call from a collection agency about this matter, they have been very rude and harrasing they also threatened me with court. I called the college and I was told that in the event that the class was not dropped correctly I only had 2 years to dispute and that I owed $820.00! I had no idea of this balance till last week, I have tried to talk to the collector but he is very rude, he has called me names and hung up on me! He claims to have sent 2 bills to an address in Nevada, where I have never lived and when I try to tell him about my address he claims I am not trying to pay what I owe! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to stop the calls and deal with the college. I appreciate your time!

Re: time limit on a collection to a college

You can pay the bill. You did not follow the proper procedures at the time you dropped out and now owe the money. You can talk to the university, but it is up to them whether or not to recall the debt from the collector. If the collector use profane or denigrating language, calls repeatedly each day, or before 8 am or after 8 PM you may have a right to sue the collector. You can demand in writing proof of the debt from the collector. Otherwise you are liable for the debt.
