Unpaid credit card balance

Hi,I have lived in US from 1996-2001.In 2001 I had to leave because of my visa expiration.I have left behind unpaid bill in amount of $6500-$7000(don't remember exactly).It is already 2005 and I have just got the visa to go back to states and I would like to ask, what will be my consequences for not paying the credit card company for this long.However, if it is an option to come down to some terms with them I am able to repay the full amount plus the late fees.(which I assume will be considerable).What are my options.Will I get arrested? Would I be put in jail?I had to leave in 2001 and I couldn't repay them at that time.

I am very worried/scared of what will happen to me. I am not a criminal.I have never ''walk on the wring side of the law''.I am sure that my credit is virtually destroyed, but I am only worried about the jail and legal problems.Can you help me with some sound advice???

You are contractually liable for the bills plus interest. You are not at risk for criminal action unless you committed fraud. Generally you (or an attorney acting for you) can negotiate a settlement or payment schedule with the creditors. You can also file bankruptcy - but I do not recommend this for this relatively small amount.

An attorney can act as intermediary for you in negotiating with the creditors so you do not have to face them directly. Generally after this much time most creditors would be willing to discount the amount owed for a lum sum cash payment.
