Legal Question in Criminal Law in Utah

I was issued a citation by the police today after I was caught shoplifting in a Dillard's department store in a mall. The store security stopped me as I was leaving the store and told me to come with them. They kept me there until a police officer came. It was in Provo, Utah which is in Utah County. Like I said, I was issued a citation and a court date to appear before a judge. I'm 20 years old, and have no record whatsoever, not even a speeding ticket, no previous theft charges, absolutely nothing. The merchandise value was said to be about $170. What kind of punishment am I likely to receive? Is it possible to have my record expunged? Please help me, I'm trying to keep this a secret from my parents, I've never broken any rules/laws and I really don't want them to find out.

When you go to court ask the court for a "plea in abeyance." This means you plead guilty but the case is kept open while you pay a fine and are on probation. At the end of probation if there are no other violations the case will be dismissed.
