Possession of Marijuana/Definition of Possession

I was in a car that was pulled over for speeding and one of the passengers had been smoking marijuana in the car and still had about 1/4 ounce in his backpack at his feet. He was in the front passenger seat and I was in the back seat on the drivers side. As we were being taken out of the car, the guy with the marijuana handed it to the officer, saying that all of it was his. I was cited for possession of marijuana. What is the definition of possession in Utah? And also, would it help for me to waive time and try to see if the DA will drop the charges?

I don't know what the law is in UT but don't speak to the DA yourself, at least call a lawyer there and get a consultation. And your fellow passenger is a jerk.
