It is very common for the prosecution to charge higher or more counts than they expect to convict. Often you can get a charge reduced from one degree to another or even dismissed after a successful period of probation. Whether or not you are able to negotiate it down depends upon the facts of your case, your prior history and the perception of the prosecutor.
