i had a man do some tile, plumbing and wall work, essentially making a new bathroom. i paid him about $3500 in labor.. the job was very bad, he lied about the hours, his abilities, and numerous other things. he took advantage of me. he refuses to fix anything or refund any money. this is complicated by the fact that what i did was not strictly legal, which he knew, so i think he has me over a barrel. what is something i can do to get compensation?

Your only option is to go into small claims court, and hope the city does not cite you for code violations, or that the defendant does not turn you in for code violations.
