18, when the child becomes an adult. Until then, the child never has an absolute right to make that choice. The court's "may" consider the wishes of a child who is at least 16 years of age but is not bound the child's wishes. A change of custody is generally made following the filing of a petition to modify the custody order which can result in there being a custody evaluation in connection with the litigation.
