Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

Name Change

is there a legal issue with a child taking the last name of someone not related? My boyfriends ex wifes daughter wants to legally take his last name (its not his daughter nor did he adopt her). If the ex wife wanted money for her daughter in the future could she go after him for it since the daughter took his last name?

Re: Name Change

There is no legal issue for the girl to take your boyfriend's last name. It will not make him liable for child support.

Re: Name Change

The girl could take his last name. However, without having more information, it's difficult to tell what legal issues may arise. For example, you may need to give notice to the girl's biological father of any legal proceedings to change the last name and you may require his consent as long as the girl is a minor. Changing the girl's last name will not obligate your boyfriend to pay child support.
