Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

My daughter is 7 months old. Her birthfather walked out on us and to put it shortly, i want him to have no part in my daughters life, he does drugs, lies, and is just not a good guy in general! However, i dont want him to just be able to walk out with his life completely untouched by our daughter being born, hwen he chose for mine and her life to be this much harder by walking out on us. He owes something positive to her life and future, since he refuses to be her father at all, and i need/deserve the help! I want him to pay child support. I would have come after him a while age when she was born, but hearsay from family and friends has lead me to beleive that as long as he contributes child support, he has a chance to legal rights over her. The main question i am trying to ask here is this- is there any way i can get child support from him, but also have him get no chance at legal rights over her, or the chance to hurt her? as of now he refuses to sign the birth certificate, he does not want the legal responsibility of our baby. I was afraid to write him on there myself because like i said, he is in no position to be taking her or having rights to her. Also i am not just talking about right now, might he be able to fight for custody or rights over her in the future? Perhaps if he paid child support over a long period of time or something...? I dont know anything about the child support laws and such, so thank you for any advice you have!

You need to go to court to get an order of sole legal and physical custody, and an order of child support.

You may call for a free consultation.
