Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

Emancipation?

What actions do I need to take to become emancipated? Can I even do this in the state of Utah? Is it going to be expensive? Lately my mother and I have not been getting along at all. It has become abusive, and I can't handle any more of this. Some family and friends have mentioned Emancipation to me...I need some guidance in what to do in order to become...emancipated. Your help would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Emancipation?

If your mother has become abusive you should immediately contact Child Protective Services. Emancipation involves you proving to the court that you can take care of yourself and provide for your financial means. If you have enough income to get yourself a place to live, and can take care of your needs, you can apply for emancipation with the local district court. You can use Utah Legal Services for a low or no fee representation. However, the best thing would be to get into counseling with your mother to resolve the problems between you. Inexpensive counseling is available through the County Mental Health center.
