Legal Question in Family Law in Utah
Final divorce papers have error in life insurance policy nos.
As a 70 year old woman whose total current income is $848. a month from Social Security, I need to know the cash value of the three life insurance policies granted to me in the final papers issued by Third District Court in Salt Lake City UT in 1989. When I found the policies and compared them to the numbers listed on the divorce paper, I found mistakes.
One policy shows the correct number, another has one digit wrong, and the third is entirely wrong because it is simply a repeat of one of the other numbers. I made copies of the policies that showed the numbers and sent it to Third District Court. They said I would need an attorney to make such a correction, so I had them forward the letter & copies to the attorney who had represented me and whose office made the typo's. They said, on the telephone, that they would take care of it, but without telling me how long it would take or how much it would cost.
But that has been 6 months ago, in April. When I called that office in May of this year, they, in effect told me to not be such a worry-wart.
Is this a process that would normally take years, or should I look for another lawyer? Is there any other avenue I could pursue?

There is no good reason that your attorney has not taken care of this matter -- for which he should not charge you. It was his mistake and he should repair it. Write a letter to his office and tell him that if the matter is not submitted to the court in 14 days that you are going to file a bar complaint, hire another attorney and bill him for the costs. You can contact the Utah State Bar (www.utahbar.org) to file the complaint.
