Re: Becoming an Independent Minor at 17
This is called emancipation of a minor. If a minor is capable of supporting and caring for her/his - self and files a petition with the court, the court can issue a decree that the minor is now emanicpated and thereafter will be treated as an adult. The consequence is that the minor is now an adult for all purposes, and no longer has a claim on the parents for support or protection, and is legally responsible for his/her life and decisions.
