Legal Question in Family Law in Utah
My main concern is this form I received from my ex-wife's lawyer, Consent to Adoption and Waiver of Notice. It doesn't state that an adoption is actually taking place. Only that I consent to it. I was worried that if I sign it I would be giving up my parental rights and then she tells me they decided that her husband isn't adopting the kids and then I'm still responsible for child support but now have no say since I gave up my parental rights. I love my kids but feel they would be better off if they are adopted by her husband who has been in their lives for many years but if he isn't going to adopt them then I don't want to give up my parental rights. I would rather pay child support and have the right to contact them. That said, if I do give up my parental rights I would like a guarantee that child support stops whether he adopts them or not. Is this form really how I'm reading it? Am I understanding this form correctly? She lives in Utah and I live in Kansas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
