Legal Question in Family Law in Utah
I have been paying child supports for over 20 years now. There was a time that I had my 2 sons for a year during the custody battle that I was paying child support to my ex wife while I had the kids. I got behind a little bit after losing my job and spent 2 years in prison for failure to pay. The entire time I was in prison they charged me back child support. I got a statement 4 years ago stating the balance was $17000 and I got a letter yesterday with the balance of $14000. I am paying $524 a month all towards back child support, but the balance never seems to go down. My ex wife has received my taxes every year, but that has never been taken off of the balance. The youngest of the 2 boys is 21 and married. I am now re-married for 5 years now and have a 3-year-old. Every year they take her taxes as well. Is there anything I can do about this? I know I should not owe any back child support. Between the year that I had them and the time I spent in prison that comes to $18864, not to mention the taxes that have not been accounted for. I'm not a bum that won't pay, it's just enough is enough.

Assemble your records and talk to ORS. You should be entitled to credits for what you have paid. Be persistent. If they cannot help you, give me a call.
