Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

I promised to pay back a personal loan my ex-husband gave me after the divorce only through an e-mail. He sent me a cashiers check. I never received any information as to where he borrowed from, interest rate or payment information. He just told me an amount to pay. I have made 17 payments to date but now being on total disability I am just unable to continue paying this loan. Also he recently sent me an e-mail stating he paid the loan off and the amount. He has always threatened that if I didn't make the payments he would adjust my alimony. He makes $140,000 a year, I only receive $26,000 between alimony and social security. What is my legal obligation for this loan if any?

You are obliged to pay the loan. Since there are no terms, you are not in default. You should pay back the amount he lent you. Since there was no interest, just pay back the principal amount.

He cannot adjust your alimony without a court order, so you will have a chance to talk to the judge before any changes are made. Since you are disabled, you can ask the judge to increase your alimony because of the unforeseen disability.
