Questioning father's wife's intentions...
I need to know what I can do should I find out that my father's wife of 5 years is only married to him for his disability check (ie., using the money for her own needs while neglecting his dementia-induced needs, etc.). Is there a way for me to get power of attorney to make medical and financial decisions for him? I am contemplating being his primary caretaker, but not sure what priority is given, by the courts, for guardianship or POA...Does his spouse have certain rights over his child when it comes to this?

Any "interested" person can apply to be the guardian and conservator of the disabled person. You file a petition and his wife can also seek the same role. A judge will make the decision based on the facts.
