Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

i was in a relationship 18 years ago while in the relationship she became pregnant. she left 7 months into the pregnancy. she did send me pictures of the girl when she was 2 never to hear from her again. i found her on facebook. my ex-girlfriend says leave her alone or i will have to pay back child support. would paternity have to be established first.

First paternity needs to be established. You have to commence that action. Second an order for child support will issue when paternity is decided. The child support order is not retroactive to the date of the birth of the child, only to the date the petition for paternity is filed.

Yes, paternity would need to be established. Either you or your ex-girlfriend could file the action. If paternity is established and child support is awarded, it can be made retroactive back four years.
