Do you have to return your engagement ring if the man broke it off. I live in Utah

Generally the ring is considered a gift with a condition attached - the act of marriage. If there is no marriage then the ring goes back. Other legal authorities treat the ring as a separate gift.

If the man who gave you the ring broke off the engagement, you probably don't have to return it. Had you broken it off, then you would. The giving of an engagement ring is considered a gift with a conditional promise to marry. If he breaks the promise, most legal authorities that I've found hold that you would be entitled to keep the ring. However, from a moral standpoint which is totally up to you, my recommendation would be to return the ring since you probably don't want to keep it anyway. But I could be wrong. That would be your judgment call.
