Legal Question in Family Law in Utah
My son wants to move to Utah & live with woman and her children
My son met a divorced woman with 5 kids while he was in Utah in the military. She owns her home and wants him to come live with her or get married. I am afraid he is making a big financial mistake. If they live or marry will he be responsible for alimony or child support. he has only known her for 1 month. He was invited back to Utah and stayed in her home for 2 weeks with her children. She met him at a military bar. I am a concerned parent please give me as much info as you can. Her husband was almost deported but she saved him from that because she would not get child support. He does not bother much with her kids and is using her kids to make my son feel needed. What does he need to consider before making a commintment either marrying or living with her. Is utah a common law state.

Marrying a person with children is always a difficult proposition. Marrying someone you met in a bar last month is far more risky.
Since the children live in Utah and the marital home would be there, Utah law applies.
I would strongly reccomend that he get a prenuptual agreement separating property. If he wants, the property separation can terminate after a certain number of years of marriage. That can be written into the agreement.
