Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

Can stepparents be forced to pay child support for their step-children

Recently a court order gave me the ability to act as an agent for my husband when he was not available. Specifically it granted me the right to provide transportation, pick-ups, drop-offs, obtaining emergency medical treatment. Now my step-son's mother claims that I am equally responsible to pay her child support from my income as well as the support she is already receiving from my husband. Is there any legal merit to this? She claims that ORS is going to start garnishing my wages and she is taking it to the Judge for a signature.

Re: Can stepparents be forced to pay child support for their step-children

You are not personally responsible for any of your husbands sole obligations such as his child support. You are required to pay his child support from his money - but you do not have to use your personal money. She cannot demand ORS to take your money, nor can she take anything to a judge for his signature without first having a hearing and giving you notice. Do not believe this woman, she is not a lawyer, nor a judge and does not know the law. Tell her to schedule the hearing and send you her legal position (her motion) and you will be delighted to appear and let the judge educate her.
