Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

Summer time visitation

I have a 13 year old son who has rarely seen his father in 9 years. His dad wants him to fly to see him this summer, I offered different dates and he refused the dates, now the boy doesn't want to go and his put it in writing to his dad. His dads attorney has ordered mediation. What should I do? Please help

Generally if a father has abandoned a child, he cannot arbitrarily reenter the child's life. However, if dad has tried to keep contact with the child, and if there is enough of a contact to justify visitation, then dad is entitled. Mediation usually comes before a formal court procedure. Your son has little choice in this matter, it is a question of dad's legal rights.
