Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

Temporary custody

I need to know what if any forms I would need, for my minor daughter to sign over temporary custody of her unborn baby to my husband and myself so we can put him on our health insurance. Since she's under 18 she cannot receive any kind of state assistance for the baby.

Re: Temporary custody

Your daughter as a minor should be covered for her health insurance under your policy - if you have one. Depending on the policy the baby may or may not be covered. I suggest that you consider adopting the baby to a stable two parent home. There are a lot of good reasons and it is generally in the child's best interests. If she does adopt out the child, generally the adoptive parents cover the cost of her medical care and that of the child.

Adoptions can occur through adoption agencies or through private means, such as through an attorney. (I am just finishing one such adoption, where the mother chose the family to adopt her child.) Either way you go, there are usually options for compensation for medical expenses. Note: It is illegal to pay the mother for carrying and delivering the child as part of an adoption.

An adoption is wise for a young mother: (1) Many young mothers stop their emotional development with the birth of a baby - for some reason it is very hard for them to complete the emotional maturation after becoming a mother - unless they adopt out; the child has a stable two parent home as opposed to a single parent home (although grandparents can and often do a good job, it is very difficult, and often the best choice for the child is to allow it to grow in a more normal home environment with age appropriate parents and potential brothers and sisters; there are many other reasons as well. Please consider it. If I can be of assistance, please call.
