Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

Unmarried gay couple seperation

I've been in a 6 year relationship. During that time we have bought houses, cars, combined finances etc. All of the joint property is in my partner's name. If we seperate is there any recourse for me with the property?

If you have contributed to the purchase of these items, you may be able to claim an equitable interest. However, your best protection would have been to have had some agreements between you. If possible, it would be wise to get some sort of agreement before your relationship becomes adversarial. You may want to approach it from 'what happens if one of us gets killed or severely injured'? (The answer is without an agreement between you - some sort of 'estate planning' - all of the property of the deceased will pass to his family, not the survivor of the two of you.
