Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Utah

Copyright Law concerning copying

Hello,

I am trying to find out what the laws are for copying something from a published book to be used for your own personal use. Not for any monetary gain. Is it legal to copy also from a book for teaching purposes?

Thank you,

Marian

Re: Copyright Law concerning copying

You can copy from a book for your own personal use, but may not sell any article without identifying the source and the material copied. If you teach and are referencing a book, you can copy the materials for your own reference, but should not distribute copies of the materials to the class without written permission of the author.
