Inter state civil law suits

I am interested in suing a person who lives in Utah. I live in California. Can I file in California or do I have to go to Utah? The injury occurred in California.

Re: Inter state civil law suits

It's hard to answer this question without more details. Generally the state where the injury occurs will have jurisdiction over a case, but for a variety of other reasons (location of witnesses, interests of the states in the issue involved, etc.) another state might be a more appropriate forum.

Can you provide any further info?

Re: Inter state civil law suits

If the incident occurred in California you can file the lawsuit here. There are several different parameters that may allow jurisdiction in either state. However, since you are in California you want the suit to be filed here.

If you require additional information on how to file a lawsuit in California please feel free to contact my office at 888-563-8529. I look forward to speaking with you.
