Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Utah

I was raped repeatedly when I was married to my ex. I reported it to my clergy (a mormon bishop) and he told me not to report it to the police, and to let "the church" handle it. Obviously the church didn't handle it at all. When I finally got out of the marriage, after being rape several more times since reporting it to the bishop, I tried reporting it to the police. They refused to file charges because of the "delay in reporting". I recently requested copies of the report (and other reports) and in the report, it is documented that the bishop told the investigator that I told him about the rape, but that he didn't believe I was actually raped. I want to know if I can sue the Mormon church and/or the bishop. There is a disturbing trend in the Mormon church of leaders instructing members to not report abuse, but to let the church handle it. It has to change!

You probably have a case against the church as well as against your husband.

We need to prevent this kind of behavior not only in the LDS church but in all churches. Women are not the personal property of husbands, nor second rate members of any church. I admire your courage and will do all I can to assist you.
