Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Utah

Can I request a later date for small claims court?

I am asking this question for my daughter. Generally she lives in Utah but is working in California for the summer on an internship. Her former landlady is taking her to small claims court for breach of contract, in that my daughter used the security deposit to pay part of her last month's rent. At this point the landlady wants the last month's rent and then in 30 days she will return the security deposit. This landlady insists that my daughter will have to return to Utah in order to go to court and will thus lose wages and possibly her job. The landlady further stated that if my daughter doesn't return she will lose the case and owe not only the money in question but all the attorney fees that the landlady has incurred. Is this true,or is the landlady using a scare tactic to try to get my daughter to comply to her wishes? Could my daughter request a later court date so that she can present her case and won't have to come back to Utah prior to her scheduled return date? I would appreciate any help that you might give on this subject.

She can request a court date in writing to the court and with a copy to each other party. Have her follow up with a telephone call to the court.
