Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Utah

My roomate moved out while still on the lease

He stopped paying his half of the rent, even though he was still on the lease. I had to have a friend move in to help me cover my half of the rent and I also had to pay his half or I would have been evicted, which would have looked horrible on my credit. Do I have a case to take him to small claims court for his half he never paid?
