Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Utah

Small Claims with other party out of state

I had a previous roommate who has moved out of state and owes me $500 on bills he generated in my state. Can I take him to small claims court even though we are in different states?

Re: Small Claims with other party out of state

A state has jurisdiction over a person based upon actions conducted in that state. Moving out of state

does not change jurisdiction, it just changes the way the person must be served. You can sue him in

small claims in your state.
