what is the law on how much an insurance company should pay on pain and suffering after paying medical expenses

There is no "law" on how much is paid, as each case is different. The amount which you may get depends on the actual amount of medical expenses, time off work, degree of permanent impairment, nature of the injuries and a host of other related facts. You should be aware that the insurance companies know that an experienced personal injury attorney knows the system and can be effective to negotiate a settlement, whereas the average person is at the mercy of the insurance company. Note, in Utah if you medical expenses and time off work is less than $3000 you are NOT entitled to compensation for pain and suffering by law.
