Legal Question in Employment Law in Utah
Job Requirement?
Approximately 3 months ago I became employed with a company here in Salt Lake City. The company does Call Center outsourcing for many large accounts. I work on one of these accounts as a Call Center Supervisor. The account happens to be a nationwide womens clothing chain.
I was told last week that one of the requirements of the job is having a credit card account with this store. I do not wish to open any credit cards at this time because I am just recovering from a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. (Plus the fact that I would probably be declined anyway.) And I do not wish for my employer to know about my current financial status.
Is forcing me to obtain a credit card with this company legal? This was not told to me when the job offer was presented.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Job Requirement?
I am not aware of any law on this subject. However, it is my opinion that an employer cannot make it a requirement AFTER employment to require an employee to obtain a credit card. It could be a requirement - although very unusual - PRIOR to employment. Respectfully decline their demand, if you are terminated you would be eligible for unemployment compensation.
