Legal Question in Employment Law in Utah

Can They Make Me Pay For Corporate Travel Out Of My Own Pocket?

My company requires that I travel for my job. They do not provide me with a corporate credit card. They have provided me with a $1500 travel advance, but my travel amounts to about $4,000 a month and the frequently take up to 5 weeks to reimburse me. I was not told prior to being hired that I would be required to pay for my travel up front. Is it legal for them to force me to ''be the bank'' and pay these expenses out of my own pocket?

They cannot "force" you to advance your own travel charges. However, you may have to choose between quiting your job or acting as bank. Investigate whether the company has a policy and procedures manual, which should outline travel policies for the company. At a minimum, you should charge them interest on carrying the travel charges. Banks make money lending money. You should too.
