Legal Question in Employment Law in Utah

No Opportunity Employer // Favoritism?

I recently was passed over for a promotion. The current position I have within the company is basically to help with supervisor responsibilites and to fill in as a supervisor when necessary. When I was promoted to this position it was with the understanding that I would be trained and qualified if a SUPERVISOR position became available. About a month ago a position became available and I went to my employer to gather information as to when it would become available to apply for. He informed me that they were at that time looking externally for the particular position to obtain ''a different perspective'' but that if they decided to hire within the company that it would be posted so that employees may apply. I have now found out that they are not only not hiring externally but have filled the position with an employee that I have more experience and seniority than from the same department. They never posted the open position. Are they violating any law here? I am younger than the average employee and feel that I may have been passed up because of my age or assumption of ''lack of experience''. When this is not the case.

Re: No Opportunity Employer // Favoritism?

If you were passed over because of your age, you may have a complaint for discrimination.
