Legal Question in Employment Law in Utah

refusing sick pay

I called in sick for work. Went to the doctor and got the ''required'' information on the note, which includes the dates out sick, diagnosis, doctor signature and date of return. Gave the note to my spvr, as requested before returning to work. Now, I am being told by my spvr that I will not be paid because the doctor wrote I had an ''illness'' instead of being specific. Isn't it a privacy issue? Can they really ask the specifics? They have already told me a second, revised note will not do as it was due to them before I went back to work. Thanks for any help.

Re: refusing sick pay

Depending on the size of your company, you may have someone above your supervisor to whom you may appeal the decision to deny your sick leave. Your company may also have a policies and procedures manual which may contain instructions or rules related to sick leave. Get the manual and see what those rules are. As a last resort you can sue your company for the sick leave in small claims court, however, if you do sue, be prepared for retaliation.
