Can a former employer tell a prospective employer that I was fired?

Yes, and can even give the reasons. However, if the former employer's statements are not true, and if the statements do not fully reflect the complete status of you employment, then the employer may be sued for interference with prospective contractual relationships (new job); slander and other causes of action. However, these are difficult things to prove, and could be expensive. Another practical solution - if you were fired - may be to tell prospective employers all of the relevant information.
