Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Utah

Does your employer need to tell you why you were fired?

At my job people are fired all of the time because someone in managment doesn't like them. Rules at my work are if you are even 1 min. late from lunch, break, or just late to work period you get a tarty ... 3 tarties and you can be fired if they choose to fire you. So basically anyone could get fired based on that rule at any time, but they aren't really fireing people for that reason. Is it against the law for them to not tell you why you are fired? Because when they fire people they refuse to tell them why.

Re: Does your employer need to tell you why you were fired?

Unless you have a written agreement, you can be fired at any time for any reason or no reason. There is not a law which requires an employer to give a reason. However, if the employer does not prove a justifiable reason for the termination, the employee is entitled to claim unemployment compensation if the employment was full time.
