Personal Credit and Finances

My brother-in-law works for a financial corporation and found out our debt and the fact that we borrowed money against my mother's home. He shared this with the rest of my siblings. Is this legal for him to be able to do this or is there something that protects our privacy even from family members?

IT is public information which could be discovered at the county recorders office.
