Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Utah

Refusal of doctor to give me my medical records

I want the medical records of my knee injury sent directly to me for my review at my leisure and my doctor refuses to do this. What can I do to get these records?

Re: Refusal of doctor to give me my medical records

You are entitled to your records. Send a letter to the doctor requesting your records and give a reasonable period of time to response - say two weeks. Demand the records or a reason why they are not being provided. Send on copy by regular mail, and a second by certified return receipt. The doctor may request that you pay for the copying charges, so either offer or be willing to pay a fee. If he still refuses you may have to sue him. You may also want to file a complaint with the State.
