Legal Question in Personal Injury in Utah

What Could it Mean When an Insurance Co Lies?

I'd like some PI attorneys' opinions as to what it means when the insurance co. of a restaurant in which you were injured, upon receiving your demand letter which you have submitted yourself, suddenly comes up with a bogus witness with a made-up story and refuses to pay anything at all? Would it be more probable that the insurance company thinks you have consulted an attorney who doesn't think you have a case (I haven't consulted an attorney), or are they just trying to stall and get you to go away? Why would they make up a totally false scenario and claim to have a witness? Is this common or rare? I'm trying to decide whether I need to bring in a lawyer or whether I can continue to fight this on my own, using Nolo Press guides. Thanks! I have a witness, but he has not yet given the insurance company a statement. Also, is it possible they think my story is made up? Or do they think I have such a good case that they don't want to have to pay out the money without causing me to go to all the trouble of getting an attorney, hoping to wear me down? All thoughts will be appreciated.

I have handled a number of restaurant cases. The restaurants are usually hesitant to involve their insurance companies because it can affect their rates. Many will deny or avoid claims until they know you are serious. Without an attorney you do not pose a great threat against them. You will also have to worry about the insurance company, as it will not give you much respect. You are welcome to call for a free consultation.
