National Restaurant's Door Broke my Finger
I was walking into a restaurant, and I started to walk through the 2d entry door, which was open, when it malfunctioned, slamming hard into my finger. It was an automatic door which, unbeknownst to me as I was walking through, had caught on the floor, and when the friction overcame the resistance, it slammed shut on my finger, which is broken as a result. I immediately reported it to the manager, as did my friend, who was a witness. My friend explained what had happened to the manager, who seemed to have trouble understanding the English language (she may be from a foreign country), and the managern then called to file an accident report. She gave me a glass of ice for my bleeding finger. She said if I needed to go to the doctor to do so and they would pay my bill. I am a court reporter, so my fingers are important. My doctor took 3 x-rays and found a fracture. He has put my finger in a splint for a month. The restaurant's insurance people say the manager was not authorized to say they'd pay my medical bills. They said an investigator would contact me within 48 hours, but no one has done so, even though I've made 2 follow-up calls to their insurance headquarters to find out why. No response.

Find out who the owners of the restaurant are, and send them notice by certified mail of your injury, medical and lost wages expenses. Most restaurants have insurance for this kind of thing, and should notify their insurer, with whom you would deal. If they do not provide reimbursement, you will probably have to sue them. Notwithstanding what insurance company propaganda states, an attorney can generally get you a better recovery than acting alone.
