Legal Question in Personal Injury in Utah

Recovering Money Owed

How can I recover money owed to me by my ex-boyfriend? Can I file a personal lien against a property he is working on? He owes me hundreds of dollars and has promised to pay me, but has not done so. I have lent him money, he has promised to pay my rent and utilities in exchange for letting him stay with me. I know he has had the money at times but refused to give me any. Is there anything I can do. I am about to get evicted from my apartment due to back rent not paid.

You first have to obtain a judgment from a court action. If the amount is less than $5000 you can file in small claims courts. Even though you do not have a written contract, oral agreements are enforceable. After you obtain a judgment you can garnish his wages, bank accounts or sieze his property through attachment processes.
