Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Utah
Can I take my landlord to small claims court to sue for my deposit back?
I rented an apartment in the basement of my landlord's home. He turned out to be continually drunk and he told us that he smoked marijuana occasionally. My husband and I work at a facility for youth addicted to drugs and alcohol. I worried if anything ever happened legally in his home for marijuana we could have lost our jobs. The landlord never actually did anything wrong except for his occasional sex joke and constantly being drunk. We signed no contract nor did we have a verbal agreement. I gave him a check specifing 550 for rent and 550 for deposit. We moved out after one month. I gave him a six day notice of moving out and he would not refund any of our deposit due to short notice?

You are required to give 30 days notice. You are not entitled to a refund.
