Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Utah

Utilites: Gas and Water

I live in an older building that uses radiators to heat each unit. I have been informed that I will soon have to start paying for gas and water utilities. I was told the amount would be determined by the number of tenants in each apartment. Is this legal? I thought you could only be charged this type of utility if there was a meter montioring usage.

Re: Utilites: Gas and Water

Generally the terms of your lease or rental agreement govern if and how you pay for utilities. Read the lease carefully for references to utilities.

I am not aware of any statute which requires that each tenant have a meter, but you may want to call you local provider (Questar, Utah Power) for further information. Check also with your local building inspection department, ask them if there are local requirements.
